This event is being held to raise awareness and generate support for The Little Prince of Andes Film

About the film:
The Little Prince of The Andes follows indigenous children of Bolivia as they adapt the classic children’s book “The Little Prince” into a play based on their own lives. In this intimate and barefaced retelling, we journey into the different worlds of the street and learn what these young people must do in order to survive. Their dance between a magical world of theater and a harsh offstage reality urges us to reexamine our own lives.

About The Film Maker:

Tupac Mauricio Saavedra is a director of photography, journalist and documentary filmmaker that splits his time between his native home, Bolivia and the United States. In 2004 completed Bolivian Baroque, a 42-minute documentary that aired on European and Bolivian television. During the historic 2005 presidential elections in Bolivia, he followed the campaign of Evo Morales, who went on to become Bolivia’s first indigenous president. His award winning documentary, On the Road With Evo, is a close look at Morales the person and the politician, as well as an examination of the political conditions that brought him into power. In recent years, Tupac has worked as a freelance cameraman and editor, producing documentary shorts for the series Frontline World, Time, Yes Magazine, from India, Cuba, Peru, Brazil, and Bolivia. Tupac has also worked as a cameraman for several award winning documentary producers and independent filmmakers. In 2011 Tupac completed the documentary, My Five Years With Evo. The documentary presents a close look at what happens in Bolivia when the first indigenous president is elected. Tupac received his Masters degree from UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism

JL Stiles

Ajayu

Artist Spolight

JL Stiles is a unique animal who for the first time is merging two totally different fields of truth seeking: Ragtime blues and higher mathematics.  Both of these disparate strands filtered through a lifetime on the run, searching for a universal truth from psychedelic Brazilian forests to US college campuses and further into his own unique vision.  JL Stiles has a mind that sees music in a similar way to how J.S. Bach saw music.  However, Bach never played the blues.

As for the blues: JL has opened for many a blues great, including BB King, Etta James and JJ Cale.  Surprisingly, looking at such a history, most of his originals would not be considered blues or folkways yet Maybelle Carter, Blind Blake and the rest of his honored forebears haunt everything he does, including his upcoming song-of-the-ages album, JL Stiles presents House of Murmurs, on which producer Etienne de Rocher (Sean Hayes) plied his remarkable talents.  It’s a bit confounding to box a one-off like JL, so the artist decided to mostly reserve his stunning ragtime and blues guitar madness for his other band, Hobo Paradise, which tears the house down regularly in San Francisco.

JL’s touring history includes a consistent presence on the West Coast and currently expanding to a nationwide audience via his latest release, which has garnered national press and national radio play.

Later Show, $8, 9:30 pm to Close

Makrú música will be playing extended sets

Landing in San Francisco from different parts of the world, various characters got together for different motives, goals and because it had to be that way, at the end of 2008 the became Makrú, a musical tool to express their points of view, ideals and support the causes they believe in, chasing equality and unifying people along the way . With influences of anything that can shake it Soul, Makrú sounds like smashing the earth and play it on a record player. Diana Gameros from Mexico, an amazing voice trained in Mexico & U.S, also an incredible composer and guitarist. Raúl Vargas from Madrid, fed by Spanish art and at the age of 20 left to collect music and knowledge around the world learning, guitar, cajón,, different percussions, didjeridoo, and more… with his compadre Javi Monge, from Barcelona who ended up in la Habana, Cuba dedicated to percussion under the wing of Yaroldi Abreu the amazing percussionist for Chucho Valdés among others. Vinicio Peñate raised equally In U.S and El Salvador brings the Cumbia-reggae-rock flavor that fits perfectly with the Californian drum set of Bob Sanders, who didn’t have enough and got himself also into flamenco guitar world. All this highlighted by the magical flute and melódica of, the called “Fantasma”. Issac Weiser, multi instrumentalist, born surrounded by musicians in Washington State U.S

Blind Willies

Blind Willies

Blind Willies began at San Francisco’s High School of the Arts as a duo playing covers of American folk songs and Alexei’s originals which he started writing when he was 15. After their professional debut at San Francisco’s Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, the band’s first two releases of all original songs, The Unkindness of Ravens (2007) and Everybody’s Looking for a Meal (2008), were highly …praised. The albums defined their sound and provided them the opportunity to perform extensively at eclectic venues, from New York’s Falcon Ridge Folk Festival and San Francisco’s Djangofest to Brooklyn’s intimate back room at Barbès. They shared stages with punk icon Penelope Houston (Avengers), “Dawg Music” innovator David Grisman, and folk iconoclast Peter Stampfel (Holy Modal Rounders).

Following their sophomore release, and in search of a larger canvas, Alexei assembled a full band of experienced, young musicians, accomplished across diverse genres including rock, jazz, classical, world, and hip-hop. Now five musicians strong, the band recorded a new album, Needle, Feather, and a Rope, at Tiny Telephone, indie engineer/producer/performer John Vanderslice’s all-analog studio in San Francisco’s Mission District.

Judging by the rich landscapes Alexei’s songs travel, the band has used the various gifts of its new members to forge a dynamic and unique sound that reflects the deeply resonant American musical traditions they each brought to the table. The music is sincere, raw, and poignant, and the band’s integrity is reflected in the 14 tracks of Needle, Feather, and a Rope as well as in the recording process. “We wanted to record in the manner of our favorite classic albums,” Alexei explains, “the band all together in the studio, live to 2” analog tape, with minimal overdubs. We felt this approach not only gives the album superior sonics, but is a more honest representation of our musicianship and soul. We punched it out in 4 days, 10 hours each day, and I think you can hear the pleasure of the experience and the fun we had.”

“In a state of sheer panic, I found out that the Danny Cohen and Blind Willies show started at 7 p.m. It was 6:30 and I was in desperate need of a shower and still had bed head from my disco nap. Buckling up my pants I ran unshowered down Geary Street to get my girlfriend and grab a cab to get to the Mission District. I thought the show started at 9-ish. Doesn’t everything start after 10 p.m. in San Francisco? Not this show. Which was fantastic . . . Blind Willies are excellent. Their latest CD, Needle, Feather and a Rope, is on heavy rotation in my apartment.”

The Bootcuts

Bootcuts

This rip-roaring, foot-stompin’, country-rockin’, honky-tonkin’, twang-buster of a band are one of the hottest country bands in the Bay Area. They are cute, they are warm, they are fuzzy, and they put on one heck of a country music show. If you find yourself sitting still through a Bootcuts show, you must not be a true country music fan. And you need to ask yourself, why the hell are you at this show.

Jessie Pony Hunt is a writer and performer from Oakland by-way-of Chicago. Her guitar playing is reminiscent of delta blues with a tin pan alley flare. Her distinct, almost ghostly voice, coupled with her personal and intimate song writing, is both vulnerable and confident and cuts straight to the heart.

The Mano Cherga Band

mano cherga

Ladies and gentlemen, we welcome you to The Mano Cherga Band experience. Growling of the tuba, wailing of the accordion, spring reverb on the semi-hollow, clinking of the glasses, wind from the skirts on the dance floor, sweat running down your back, a smile on your lips and tears in your eyes. That’s what it’s all about for us, and we love to share those moments with you.

We are Jamie, Beodan, Sasha, Nino and Zhenya – tuba, guitar/voice, accordion, drums, bass – US, Serbia, Ukraine, Bosnia, Ukraine – respectively and always respectfully. The recipe is simple: take Balkan Romani, traditional and popular tunes, apply swing, turn up the bass, don’t be shy on the snare and sing like this is the last song you will ever sing.

Songbird Presents – Titan Ups April Residency at Amnesia

Titan Up Tuesdays – 5 Week Residency at Amnesia

9-Close

Amnesia
853 Valencia St  San Francisco, CA
Sliding Scale $8-$10
Live 8 piece band – Rocksteady and Vintage Reggae DJ

Frontman – Bob Reed – formerly of Oranger

Ghostown Live at Great American Music Hall

The Titan Ups play traditional Rocksteady and early Reggae with an accent on authenticity. Whether it’s a classic track from Toots and the Maytals, to more obscure classics to soon-to-be-classic original tunes, the Titans “Bring It” and keep the dance floor packed from start to finish!

The group is led by Bob Reed, ex frontman of 90s S.F. Noisepop favorites Overwhelming Colorfast and lead guitarist for indie rock darlings, Oranger. Drummer Dave Leonard has handled drumming duties for the likes of The Sermon, Pat Johnson and Penelope Houston. The Group is rounded out by Mike Davenport and Igor Belogolovsky on guitars (Coup De Ska), Jen Hale on Keyboards (Killer’s Kiss) and Carroll Ashby on trombone.

The group calls San Francisco’s Mission District home and have quickly distinguished themselves as San Francisco’s Premier Rocksteady band!

Who could have predicted the early reggae and rocksteady music revival that took hold in California over the last two years? Not that we’re complaining: Bands regularly take the stage to perform vintage Jamaican sounds from an era when the island’s music incorporated American R&B, funk, and psychedelic pop, and used Hammond organs for its unique shuffle rhythms. Former Oranger member Bob Reed leads Titan Ups, a seven-member outfit that plays both originals and covers of songs from Jamaican acts like the Maytals, the Pioneers, and the Techniques   – SF Weekly
